HOW Design Live is one of the largest annual conferences for creative professionals. The five-day extravaganza provides designers with more than 80 educational sessions, 13 keynote presentations representing the most innovtative minds in design, technology and business. HOW Design Live is host to more than 4,000 attendees traveling from every state in the U.S. and flying in from dozens of countries around the world. This convention allows for an exclusive sneak peek of new technologies, tools and products from up to 100 vendors. More importantly, it creates an accepting, creative design community that allows for real opportunities to connect with other designers in the industry and gain insight from experience.
Attending HOW Design Live has been on my to-do list since 2013, when I was introduced to the idea by a college professor. This year, the design team at MorningStar has been given the wonderful opportunity to head down to Chicago for a day of insight and inspiration at this year’s conference. Ryan has encouraged each of us to choose what day we’d would like to experience, based on the schedule of presenters. I’ll be attending the opening day of the conference, so it will be exhilarating to be there for the first discussions and the Opening Ceremony Reception. I am most eager to hear Timothy Goodman’s keynote presentation, and be awestruck by Gemma O’Brien’s expressive lettering workshop. Needless to say, I have already formed quite the itinerary for this adventure.
I am looking forward to a day full of fan-girling over some of the industry’s most creative minds, as their personal stories and insight will inspire me to be more imaginative. Simply interacting with my design idols will fuel the flame of ingenuity, which is how I will grow as an artist.
Furthering your education in the design industry after schooling is absolutely a must because trends in design change quickly, and technology is evolving rapidly. If you want be on top of your game, you need to stay ahead of the curve. Doing so is beneficial on both a personal and commercial level. Soaking in the expertise and experience of some of my personal favorite designers is how I will grow as a designer.
These types of events are extremely important as they are the perfect time and place for networking and making connections with other designers from all around the world. When you meet people from other places around the world and engage in conversations, your mind expands as you take in their wisdom and intelligence. Building up the design industry with cross-cultural conversations creates a strong sense of community, which allows for global collaboration and understanding. Making these connections is how I will grow as a person.
Stay tuned for a wrap-up later this Spring of our designers’ experiences and insights from HOW Design Live!
